Phonetic variation in Standard Scottish English: Rhotics in Dundee
نویسندگان
چکیده
Research on Scottish English /r/ mainly focused on the urban centres of Glasgow and Edinburgh, while the phonetic variation of this sound remains largely unknown in other cities. This paper aims at providing new data to characterize Standard Scottish English and one of its prominent feaures by analyzing the variation of both prevocalic and non-prevocalic /r/ in Dundee. Though age and gender have some influence on /r/ production, the most significant factors are phonetic and phonological environments. Variants include not only taps and approximants, but also fricatives, affricates, and vocalic realizations, though the speakers remain essentially rhotic.

Rhotic variation and schwa epenthesis in windsor French
This study investigates two idiosyncratic phenomena found in the French dialect of the Windsor area in SW Ontario. (1) Rhotics in this dialect are pronounced in three phonetic varieties: the dorsal fricative, the alveolar approximant, and the alveolar tap. (2) An epenthetic schwa is also found in the phonetic realization in certain phonemic contexts. Through phonetic analysis of recorded speech...
متن کاملVariation in Voice Onset Time along the Scottish-English Border
This paper presents findings on VOT variability in voiced and voiceless plosives produced by 159 speakers from four locations straddling the English-Scottish border. The analysis reveals key effects of both social and phonetic factors, highlighting the importance of both in accounting for variability.

This study investigates phonetic factors – vocalic/consonantal context, duration, stress favouring rhotic perception of the lateral approximant in Greek. Nonsense words containing the lateral in different lengths in both intervocalic and internal coda position, alongside similar words containing a rhotic, were presented to Greek listeners for categorisation as /l/ or /r/. Results showed that la...

According to some researchers (Hopkins, 2004a; Hopkins & Smith, 2008), there is a perception among certain Muslims that anti-Muslim racism is higher in areas where there is a high density of Muslim residents, such as Glasgow. In contrast, other Muslims may feel that Islamophobia is higher in places with fewer numbers of Muslim residents. Through an investigation of Muslims’ experiences of Islam...
متن کاملNon-normative preaspirated voiceless fricatives in Scottish English: Phonetic and phonological characteristics
Preaspiration is usually associated with stops rather than fricatives, both at phonological and phonetic levels of description. This study reports the occurrence of phonetic (nonnormative) preaspiration of voiceless fricatives in Scottish Standard English (SSE) spoken in the Central Belt of Scotland. We classify it as non-normative because it is variably present in different speakers, but the d...
